Interior vs Exterior Window Cleaning Cost Melbourne | Honest Guide

The most common question when booking a window clean in Melbourne: do I need interior and exterior, or is exterior-only enough? The honest answer depends on your home, your situation, and what you're trying to achieve. Here's the pricing, the trade-offs, and the advice.

The price difference — interior and exterior vs exterior only

Interior and exterior cleaning costs roughly 50% more than exterior-only. Here's what that looks like in real numbers across Melbourne's Bayside, Glen Eira and Stonnington — see detailed breakdowns in single storey window cleaning costs and double storey window cleaning costs:

PropertyScopePrice
Single storeyExterior onlyFrom $139
Single storeyInterior & exterior$250–$400
Double storeyExterior onlyFrom $249
Double storeyInterior & exterior$450–$650

Why is interior cleaning more expensive?

The 50% premium for interior cleaning reflects real additional work — not margin.

Time per window

Interior cleaning with a squeegee and scrim is slower than exterior pole work. Each window requires careful positioning, squeegee technique and detail wiping on the edges.

Access and care

Moving around furniture, protecting timber floors, working in each room individually — this takes time and care. We move items on windowsills and protect floor surfaces throughout.

Two separate techniques

Interior cleaning uses traditional squeegee and microfibre scrim; exterior uses the pure water-fed pole system. The cleaner maintains two different setups for the one job.

What does interior glass actually accumulate?

This is where most people underestimate how dirty interior glass gets — it's a different kind of grime from the exterior, and it's invisible at casual glance.

Fine dust haze settles uniformly across all glass surfaces. It's hard to notice day-to-day until it's cleaned off and the difference in room brightness is immediate. Bedrooms and bathrooms accumulate mineral deposits on the inside glass from repeated moisture cycling, particularly in winter. Kitchen windows and any glass near the cooking area accumulate a thin grease film that attracts dust and creates a persistent haze. Sliding doors and French doors at child height are heavily marked, and adults rest hands on windows and leave oils on the glass that don't wipe off without proper technique and equipment.

The rebooking trap — why exterior-only costs more long term

Here's the economics most people don't see: a customer books exterior-only to save money. The outside glass looks great. Then they notice the inside glass. Now they want it done — but that's a second visit, a second call-out, a second minimum booking. The combined cost ends up higher than if they'd booked both at the same time.

Booking interior and exterior together is always better value than booking exterior and then adding interior as a separate job. The call-out cost doesn't disappear just because you're adding a service. See the residential window cleaning service for full scope and booking options.

When is exterior-only the right call?

  • You had a full interior and exterior clean within the last 6 months and only need the outside refreshed
  • You're preparing for a quick inspection or open home where kerb appeal is the primary concern
  • Budget is a factor and interior glass is in reasonable condition
  • You won't be home — exterior-only can be done without access to the property

When should you book interior and exterior?

  • It's been more than 12 months since the interior glass was last professionally cleaned
  • You can see visible haze, condensation marks or fingerprints on inside surfaces
  • You're moving in or moving out — full clarity on both sides is the clean-start standard
  • You have young children — sliding door glass at child height collects fingerprints relentlessly
  • You want the full “freshly cleaned home” effect — interior clarity changes how rooms feel

Do I need to be home?

For exterior-only, no — as long as we can access the perimeter of the property. For interior cleaning, yes. You or someone you trust needs to be present for the interior portion of the job. We work room by room and give you an estimated time window when you book.
